ManChon U (Kevin) grew up in Macau. He studied in The Workers' Children High School (Macau) and graduated with the degree of science in 2002. As a youth, Kevin enjoyed athletics. In junior high school he was a member of the school's shotput team. In senior high school he switched to Karate, then becoming a member of the Macau national team. Kevin represented Macau to participate in the 5th Asian Junior Karate Competition in year 2000, and the 2nd World Junior Karate Competition in 2001. In 2002, Kevin left the team to attend college at Shanghai University.
At Shanghai University, Kevin majored in computer science, receiving his Bachelor of Engineering degree in 2006. While there he was selected to take part in the research project in the Computer Systems Research Laboratory of the Computer Science department. Given on this opportunity, Kevin worked very hard and his final year project received an A grade, an accomplishment shared by only 3% of nearly 300 students in the whole department. Furthermore, Kevin's work was appraised by the University as "The Excellent Thesis of Shanghai University" and was also published in both national and interntional conferences. In 2005, Kevin was selected by Shanghai University as one of the five Elite Student Representatives participated in the first exchange program between Shanghai University and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In the exchange program, he worked at the headquater of Webasto AG. in Munich (Germany) as an IT intern. His job role was to provide IT services and software development to the company.
Upon graduation from Shanghai University, Kevin decided to return back to Macau to begin his professional career. He worked at Cable & Wireless Communications (LSE: CWC) Macau Branch (CTM) for about two years, beginning in the position of Assistant Analyst Programmer and after 14 months promoted to the Senior level. When Kevin was in CTM, he learned a lot about large-scale software systems, gained deeper sight in provisioning areas, and became sophisticated in Linux/UNIX systems and Oracle database. He has also learned about how security equipments (i.e. IPS, VPN, Firewall, etc.) work in a real industry, how to perform security incident response, investigation, and compliance review. He was also responsible for managing all Disaster Recovery Drills in the company. Yet in August 2008, Kevin left CTM in order to pursue his Ph.D. in computer science, having been granted a full scholarship to attend The University of Georgia (UGA) in USA.
