Research Day 2009 - Submission Instructions

The event will take the form of a poster session and competition, and all graduate students are encouraged to participate by:

- submitting and presenting a poster

- submitting a resume for inclusion in a resume book

This event will provide an opportunity for students to present their research, whether complete or a work-in-progress to:

- CS faculty

- faculty from other UGA departments

- university administrators

- industry representatives (from Google, AFLAC, etc.)

- visiting alumni

- prospective students

The event will take the form of a poster competition. Refreshments will be served. Visitors and faculty will vote for best poster, and prizes will be awarded.

Details of the event:

The poster competition will be structured into four 30-minute sessions. Students will be "on duty" at their posters for two sessions, and free to circulate around to other posters, enjoy refreshments, etc. during the remaining two 30-minute sessions.

Prizes:

  • First prize - $500 in travel funds for a student author to present a paper at a conference.
  • Second prize - $250 in travel funds for a student author to present a paper at a conference.
  • Third prize - $100 gift certificate at the University bookstore.

How you can participate:

  • Prepare and submit an interesting, informative, nicely designed, grammatically correct poster.
  • Prepare a factually accurate, appealing, grammatically correct resume.
  • Prepare and practice a brief "poster talk".
  • Attend the event, circulate around to see what your fellow grad students are doing, interact with visitors, and make a good impression.

Poster Submission:

You can find the poster template [here]. It consists of a single powerpoint slide, formatted to print to 24 in. x 32 in. It contains some text boxes, logos, and a general outline for the posters. You don't need to follow the outline exactly; it is meant only to give guidance. Please don't make a dark background on the poster or on sections of the poster, as that will complicate printing.

Submit your file by email to: researchday@cs.uga.edu, with the subject line: Poster Submission.

  • The body of the message should contain:
    • The title of the poster
    • Your name
  • A plaintext abstract of 250 words or less.
  • The poster file should be sent as an attachment.
  • Please do not submit before Wednesday, March 3rd, as the researchday@cs.uga.edu account will not be active prior to that date.

After you submit your poster, it will be reviewed by two faculty members. You'll get feedback within a few days.
