Their project, GovTok, turns 311 civic reporting into a short-form video platform. Taking inspiration from TikTok and Instagram Reels, GovTok lets residents report a local problem, like a pothole or a broken streetlight, by recording up to a 20-second video and optionally adding a short description. The platform does everything else: it automatically removes personally identifiable information, classifies the issue, and pinpoints where it is. Local governments can then “stitch” a reply video that shows the problem fixed, so residents see the result of their report directly. In a form of “pothole politics” officials earn public trust by visibly responding, and residents get a faster, more direct way to improve their communities.
